Doctors, medical practitioners, healers, and surgeons from all over the globe whether practicing conventional or alternative forms of healing are increasingly believing in the positives of Reiki. A non-invasive form of healing, Reiki does not use manipulative movements like in massage either. It simply uses gentle touches given through the clothes. However, it must be remembered that Reiki cannot be relied on to cure illnesses and disease, but only creates a positive ambience around the patient that assists the healing process.
What is Reiki?
Originating in Japan, Reiki is a term that is made of two Japanese words, namely, “Rei” that means Universal life and “Ki” which stands for energy. Together the term means Cosmic or spiritual healing energy that exists in all living things. It is based on the premise that you can build a connection with this spiritual energy that flows through your body. By strengthening this energy with positive thoughts and good living, you can not only maintain good health and wellness, but you can also channel the energy to help other people. Reiki is not based on any religious philosophy nor is it connected to a religion or practice. It is not related to massage therapy but is a form of healing that uses life force energy.
When a person’s spiritual energy is weak or does not flow freely, he or she goes through emotional and physical disharmony. Reiki sources healing power from God or the Supreme Consciousness and has the capability of easing the stress and pressure. As a result, the body and mind regain their balance and return to a state of wellness. Each Reiki session focuses on treating the patient mentally, physically, and emotionally. At the end of the session, patients typically feel a sense of relaxation and pleasant calm.
History of Reiki
The discovery of Reiki as a form of healing is credited to Dr. Mikao Usui, a doctor in Japan. History says that Usui Sensei as he was also called climbed the Mount Kurama where he spent time meditating and fasting for 20 days. On the 21st day, he sensed an incredible Reiki on his head and felt the spiritual awakening as he attained the knowledge for healing with Reiki. He returned home to use the healing on his own body and his family members. Later, he went on to heal the many people that came to him for help.
Usui-Sensei passed on his techniques, traditions, and beliefs to the grandmasters that have created many different forms that exist today. Reiki is considered a miracle and divine gift that can treat diseases to promote physical health and mental well-being. To quote Usui Sensei, “This is surely a secret process to bring a good fortune and also a miraculous medicine to remedy all kinds of diseases.”
To maintain the purity of the positive energy present in your being, Usui-Sensei recommended five main principles of living:
- Show kindness in your behavior to others.
- Do your duty diligently.
- Be thankful for everything you have.
- Control your anger.
- Be happy always.
Usui-Sensei directed his followers using simple and easy to understand guidelines. He said that you can balance and purify your mind and thoughts simply by joining your hands in prayer and chanting in the morning and evening. By doing so, you can draw spiritual essence into yourself and your everyday living.
How a Reiki Session is Given
Should you sign up for a Reiki healing, you can expect that the session will last from 60 to 90 minutes. In the first session, you can spend time with the healer talking about the specific ailments and health issues for which you need treatment. In turn, the healer will explain what to expect from the session and the procedures adopted.
Reiki healing is given with the patient lying on a massage table on the back with the shoes removed. You can wear loose, comfortable clothing since healing is given through the clothes. The therapist can give healing by lightly touching you or holding his hands over your body without contact depending on your comfort levels. You can also choose to sit in a chair instead.
Using the special hand positions in Reiki, the healer begins the treatment beginning at the head or feet. You’ll likely feel a warm, soothing sensation or a tingling feeling. Some patients also sense complete relaxation and calm that is pleasant and rejuvenating at the same time.
Learning to Perform Reiki
Any person wanting to learn how to perform Reiki can train in the art. You do not need to have any special intellectual abilities or inherent talent nor will you have to spend years practicing before you reach perfection. You also don’t need to spend hours meditating. By simply learning under the guidance of a Reiki master, you can form that unique connection with the Almighty, feel his protection, and channel the healing energies. Reiki believes that every person possesses the divine gift through which she or he can heal herself or himself and also all other living things in the environment.
When you begin your initiation with the Reiki Master, he will pass on the knowledge and skills to you. You will learn to attune yourself to the energy sources within yourself and create that bond with the Cosmic world. The Reiki Master awakens a heightened psychic ability, extrasensory perception or ESP, clearer awareness and intuition, and even, a second sight or sixth sense. As you continue to practice Reiki, the healing you perform will be more effective and potent. You can rest assured that Reiki can never hurt anyone. It is perfectly suited for any person, young and old since it can naturally adapt itself to the kind of treatment the patient needs.
